Vanessa Whitmore snapped her fingers twice, the way you would call a dog.

"Clara. Water. And this time, no ice. I told you yesterday."

Clara set the glass down on the marble table without a word. She had been the housekeeper at Whitmore House for three years, and in three years Vanessa had never once said thank you.

Across the room, Vanessa's husband Daniel scrolled through his phone. He didn't look up. He never did.

"Honestly," Vanessa said to her friends, loud enough to carry, "you can't find good help anymore. My mother-in-law hired her. Charity case, I think."

"She did," Clara said.

Eleanor Whitmore closed her eyes. "Then it's time, sweetheart. I can't watch them take this family apart anymore. Next Friday is the board meeting. I want you in that room."
