Chapter Four
The Lakeview
2 min read
Jenna knew exactly where he was.
She didn't wait for a bus. She ran. Six blocks through the dark and the snow, in sneakers and a winter coat thrown over her pajamas, to the Lakeview Diner on Clark Street.
It wasn't open yet. The lights were off.
Arthur was sitting on the frozen curb outside the front door in his striped pajamas and one slipper, shaking, his lips blue.
"Arthur!"
She dropped to her knees beside him, tore off her coat and wrapped it around him. He was so cold he could barely talk.
"Jenna," he whispered. "I came to find you. Eileen's not coming. I know she's not coming. I know she's gone." He was crying. "But you came."
"I'm here," Jenna said. "I'm here. I've got you."
She called 911. Then she called Luke.
Luke arrived at the hospital twenty minutes after the ambulance.
He found Jenna sitting in the hallway outside the ER in her pajamas, shivering, with frost still melting in her hair.
He sat down beside her. For a long moment, he couldn't speak.
"The doctor said if you'd found him ten minutes later…" He stopped. "Jenna. How did you know where he'd be?"
"Because it's where he met your mother," she said. "It's the only place he's ever been really sure of."
Luke put his head in his hands.
"I didn't believe you," he said. "About the money. About the sweater. I believed Brielle, because it was easier than admitting I'd fallen in love with someone who might hurt me." He looked at her. "And my father's been telling me for weeks there was a tall girl in his room at night. And I told him he was confused."
"He wasn't confused," Jenna said quietly.
"No." Luke pulled out his phone. "I had security pull the camera from the upstairs hallway after you left. I hadn't checked it before. I didn't think I needed to."
He handed her the phone.
The footage was timestamped Tuesday, 2:14 a.m. A tall woman with long hair walking down the hallway in a silk robe, carrying a blue sweater. Opening Arthur's bedroom door. Coming out four minutes later with something gold in her hand.
Before she disappeared around the corner, she turned. The camera caught her face perfectly.
Brielle Vance.
It wasn't just the four thousand dollars.
Luke's lawyers spent a week going through his father's accounts. Over two years, since Arthur's diagnosis, more than three hundred thousand dollars had quietly disappeared. Jewelry. Cash. Small transfers. All while Brielle had a key to the house.
And there was more. Brielle's father, the board chairman, had been building a case to have Arthur declared incompetent so he could force a sale of Pierce Pharmaceuticals to a private equity firm. Brielle was supposed to marry Luke, keep him distracted, and help her father make the vote happen.
Luke confronted them both in the boardroom with the footage on the wall screen.
Brielle cried. Her father threatened to sue.
The board voted him out by lunch.
Brielle Vance was charged with grand theft and elder abuse. Her ring, the one the size of a grape, was found to have been paid for with money from Arthur's account.
