The reception was a blur.

Alexander didn't let go of her hand once. He introduced her to every single guest as "my wife, Evie Stone." He danced with her. He handled every whisper, every stare, every question with a cool look that shut people up instantly.

Evie's mother looked like she'd swallowed a lemon.

It wasn't until midnight, in the back of his car on the way to his penthouse, that Evie finally got to ask.

"How did you know my name?"

Alexander looked out the window at the lights of Manhattan for a while.

"Six years ago," he said, "my little sister Lucy was diagnosed with leukemia. She was eleven. She spent four months in the pediatric cancer ward at Mount Sinai."

Evie went very still.

"There was a young nurse on the night shift," he said. "Just out of nursing school. Every night, when Lucy couldn't sleep because she was scared, that nurse would sit with her and paint her toenails with glitter polish and tell her stories about a princess who fought dragons with a stethoscope."

"Lucy," Evie whispered. "Lucy Stone. With the purple hat."

"She wore that hat until the day she died," Alexander said quietly. "She was buried in it. And the last thing she said to me in the hospital was, Tell Evie the princess won."

Evie couldn't speak.

"I never had the chance to thank you," Alexander said. "I couldn't. I could barely function for two years after she died. And when I finally went looking for you, I found out your father owed half of Wall Street." He looked at her. "So I made the deal. I asked for Sinclair's daughter. I assumed it would be you."

"But they gave you Chloe."

"Your parents never even mentioned you had a sister. Not once in eighteen months." His jaw tightened. "I agreed to marry Chloe because I thought that if I was part of your family, I might at least see you again. At dinners. At Christmas."

He paused.

"And then this morning, I got a phone call from your grandmother."

Evie stared at him. "Nana June called you?"

"At seven a.m. She said, My granddaughter Chloe is on a plane to Spain, and my daughter-in-law is going to put Evie in that dress. I'm telling you so you can decide what kind of man you are."

Alexander turned and looked at her.

"I decided," he said.

His penthouse had a guest room. He showed her to it and said goodnight at the door like a gentleman.

"We'll figure out what you want," he said. "If you want to annul it, I'll do it quietly. Your father's debt is paid either way. That's not conditional anymore."

He closed the door.

Evie sat on the edge of the bed in her wedding dress. Then she remembered the piece of paper in her bouquet.

She unfolded it.

It was Chloe's handwriting. A text message draft, written out longhand.

Rafe — Plan is still on. I leave Sat morning, Mom puts Evie in the dress, she marries him. In 6 months I come back, say I made a mistake, he dumps the boring sister for me, and I get the prenup money AND the guy. Mom already agreed. Evie will never know. 😘

Evie read it three times.

Her own mother had agreed.

Her own mother had sent her down that aisle as a placeholder.
